Our Craziest Paranormal Experience Happened Off Camera

3/4/2021

The other night... March 2, 2021... the Afterlife Road crew had our craziest paranormal experience to date. As fate would have it though, it happened off camera.

One thing first though: we’re going to conceal the location’s identity. All I will say is that it’s a cemetery we’ve filmed at before for our channel. I’m not revealing its identity because I don’t want to sensationalize an already severely desecrated burial spot. I fear the repercussions of giving the legend more power, and what would happen if an inexperienced thrill seeker further damages the graves. Plus, the legend itself isn’t important for this story. All you need to know is that once you park your car, it’s a quick walk to a path that leads to the cemetery.

In last week’s episode, I mentioned that sometimes we’ll conduct preliminary investigations, off camera, at supposedly haunted locations near us. The opposite is also true. If we pass by a public place we’ve filmed an investigation at before, like a creepy road or a cemetery, sometimes we’ll hop out of the car real quick. Even though we don’t have any cameras or equipment on us, it’s still cool to revisit these locations.

This is what we did on the evening of March 2. It was three of us in the car, driving home, when we passed a cemetery we’ve investigated twice before.

Approaching the familiar road that it lies along, we all felt overwhelmed with anxiety. Fear. One of the investigators with me recommended we proceed incrementally. Start in the car with the windows down. If we feel more comfortable, exit the vehicle and approach the path leading to the cemetery. If we still feel safe, we enter.

While in the car, I could’ve sworn I heard a female cry. But my first thought as always was to debunk. Since we were near a main road, I couldn’t rule out it was a car screeching or something in the distance. So I wasn’t thinking much of it in the moment, and I convinced the other investigators it was okay to exit the vehicle and make the short walk to the path.

As we were walking, we heard breathing in our ears and didn’t feel alone. Something bad was going to happen. One of the two others with me got the vivid and terrifying image of a large animal snarling and guarding the cemetery. She said that guardian creature perfectly described the feeling all of us were getting. That feeling you get when you face a dangerous animal right before it attacks you. Knowing in that moment you made a dire mistake. You messed up and now you’re going to pay for it with your life.

As we approached the path, she was adamant: something was going to happen. And when we finally reached it, something did. Staring down the path, we see a pack of glowing red eyes manifest right in front of us. They weren’t there at first, and then they suddenly were. I only saw two pairs, completely still and just staring back, but the others with me insisted they saw at least five. Somehow, that vision came true: there was some sort of creature waiting for us.

The eyes were from way down the path, and our flashlights weren’t bright enough to reach that far. So we immediately run to the car so we can shine its headlights down there. In the three or so minutes it took to spin the car around, whatever red eyes we all saw were gone. And there was nothing in sight. We rolled the windows down and blared the horn; we didn’t see or hear anything scurry.

That’s when a chilling thought was proposed: what if those weren’t animals?

In retrospect, I wish I had our FLIR thermal imaging camera on us. With a range of about 100 feet, that would’ve definitively told us one way or another. All I will say is this: if it can be proven that those were not living creatures, I will instantly believe in ghosts.

But that wasn’t all. No, that was just the beginning.

All of a sudden, a bright beachball sized glowing orb of light was seen in the woods. Through our own eyes, not through a camera or lens. Remember, we didn’t have any equipment or cameras with us, so we were unfortunately unable to document this unbelievable sight.

After seeing this light, both investigators with me got severely affected by whatever energy was emanating from the cemetery. One of them felt paralyzed and unable to speak; the other suddenly got overcome with rage. I’ve never seen them angry before. This was very unlike them.

I decided to drive to the next road over just so we could recoup and not be as close to the cemetery’s entrance. That’s when all three of us started to experience time in strange ways.

The two minute drive felt like twenty. Driving at twenty-five miles per hour felt like we were speeding down the highway.

And then, I kid you not, all three of us saw the moon above us change position and orientation in a matter of seconds. It literally was on one side of the sky, then it was flipped and on the other, as if we were looking at its mirror image. This was not a trick of the eye, because we were completely stationary.

There is more to this story, but that’s the basics of it. It’s all I can share without revealing the identities of the location and other investigators with me.

I’ll conclude by sharing this: when going to bed that night, I experienced sleep paralysis as soon as my head hit the pillow. I wasn’t asleep yet, and hadn’t even closed my eyes. Much like the investigator that felt paralyzed after seeing the light, I couldn’t move. I couldn’t speak. And it felt like I was being lowered into the ground, as if being buried in a casket.

Our Scariest Ghost Hunts of 2020

2020 wasn't all bad...
It was the first year we committed to weekly investigation videos, meeting incredible friends and fellow "Parahistorians" along the way.

Thank you for following our zany adventures, and hope you enjoy this 2020 retrospective  After nearly 50 investigations this year (we had to take two months off due to the pandemic), these 5 will stick with us the most:

The Witch's Ball

Simply put: this was the only investigation to date that couldn't finish. It got too intense, which isn't something we're proud of saying. Listen below to the mind-boggling, crystal clear EVP's we documented:

Pere Cheney

A place Brienna had previously investigated, we returned with the full team to follow up on experiences of hearing growls and other strange sounds in the abandoned cemetery. Supposedly one of the most haunted locations in all of the mid-west (not just Michigan!), it more than lived up to its notorious reputation. Typically, we find that the sensationalized or popular urban legends don't have much merit, but this was the exception.

Henderson Castle

This was our second investigation of a castle, and it's still wild to think that Michigan of all places has such beautiful structures that not only are open to the public, but also supposedly haunted. Though our initial investigation didn't yield much in terms of documented activity, we later visited the cemetery that lies in its shadow, where the Henderson family is buried. We got impressive responses that led us right to the grave of the castle's original owner.

Striker Cemetery

It's always great working with other investigators, especially those as renowned as Kent County Paranormal and Paranormal XL, two teams that have been well-established in Michigan for a while. When we teamed up to investigate Striker Cemetery, the supposed "beast" that haunts its grounds definitely made itself known:

South Lyon Hotel

Perhaps my all-time favorite investigation, we really needed to figure out what was haunting this well-known hotspot. It's even featured on the Wikipedia list of haunted places in America, it's supposedly that active. Amazingly, we were able to narrow down the activity to one singular theme: fire.

Most Haunted Michigan Places YOU Can Visit This Halloween

10/28/2020

Picture
For nearly four years now, we've investigated the most haunted locations Michigan has to offer.
We recently posted an exclusive "Top 20" countdown highlighting our most favorite, haunted locations we've been to:

Here's a brief look at some of these sites, all known to be paranormally active, and that YOU can visit this Halloween:

The Witch's Ball (Memphis, Michigan)

A large sphere above an otherwise unassuming grave is host to numerous legends. Dubbed the "Witch's Ball," it is said if you look into the sphere, apparitions and dark shadows will appear behind you, and voices will lure you deeper into cemetery and into the woods behind it.

During our investigation of Memphis Cemetery, where the "Witch's Ball" resides, we captured tons of EVP's; heard a loud SCREAM; documented the smell of formaldehyde appeared out of nowhere and then vanished after just 45 seconds or so; and ended our investigation after having strange camera battery drainage and malfunctions.

Eloise Asylum (Westland, Michigan)

When asked what my favorite investigation has been, I always say this one. Not only is it one of Michigan's most iconic haunted hotspots (recently featured on Travel Channel's "Destination FEAR"), it lives up to its reputation.

During our investigation, we captured one of our only visual anomalies ever: a MISTY FORM appears as I whip my camera behind me, where I felt something rush up on me just moments before. This is the same area an employee reported getting pushed, and a knife was thrown at her.
One of our own investigators also got overwhelmingly sick and dizzy on the third floor, and had to excuse herself from the investigation.

McCourtie Park (Somerset Center, Michigan)

A mysterious "lady in blue" is said to roam the park's historic bridges at night. No one knows who she is, but rumors are that she could be from the Underground Railroad which supposedly ran through the park. The park's disc golf course is named after this apparition, thus it seems the park embraces the legend.

During our investigation, we caught a mysterious whisper on camera, as well as a potential female voice; documented bizarre EMF spikes; and our new Parascope device detected static energy fluctuations on one of the park's bridges.

Pere Cheney (Crawford County, Michigan)

Once a booming lumber town, Pere Cheney is now abandoned, literally a ghost of what it once was. Though the town itself is gone, its former cemetery is known by many as one of the "most haunted" places in Michigan. Growls, voices, and shadows are common reports.

During our investigation, tons of EVP's were captured, including a creepy male voice as soon as Ben begins to provoke; a unexplained child's size shoe print mysteriously appeared on our car; and a shadow figure was seen.

Dudgeon Swamp (White Cloud, Michigan)

This is said to be Michigan's most haunted location... and it lives up to that reputation. Rumors of incest, murder, and insanity are supposedly the origins of this haunting. It's a crazy story with many twists and turns. For a more in-depth recounting of the history, we recommend listening to this episode of "So Dead" that covers the case: https://www.sodeadpodcast.com/podcasts/ep49

During our investigation, we documented multiple light anomalies and "orbs" on both video and Polaroid; had insane EMF fluctuations on command and answering questions... that were literally the highest readings we've ever captured. We also
felt an overwhelming feeling of unease and chest pains

Old Quaker Cemetery (Nashville, Michigan)

This forgotten old Quaker cemetery is one of the most historic in all of Michigan. Among its burials is a soldier who marched with George Washington, whose spirit is said to manifest, aiming a gun at you, before disappearing. Voices and shadows are also reported.

During our investigation, a disembodied female voice heard; a clear EVP saying "COME HERE" was documented; and a b
lack shadow mass was seen.

Hell's Bridge (Algoma Township, Michigan)

Supposedly, a man by the name of Elias Friske killed a bunch of schoolchildren, and when locals found out, hanged him atop a local bridge. According to the legend, his last words were that it wasn't him, but the devil itself that killed the children. To this day, the bridge he was hanged on, now referred to as "Hell's Bridge," is said to be haunted by children ghosts that manifest in the water; glowing eyes; and dark shadow figures atop the bridge and in the surrounding woods.

During our investigation, we picked up on an unexplained smell of lilac flowers; an intelligent male voice communicating via spirit box; the feeling of being touched after crossing the bridge; and camera malfunctions and drainage.

Stimson Hospital (Eaton Rapids, Michigan)

Renowned doctor Frances Blanchard fell to his death from an elevator shaft in this former hospital's third floor. It is now said that its former morgue, as well as second floor hospital rooms, are haunted by multiple "angry" and aggressive forces, manifesting in the forms of shadows and strange growls and voices. The hospital is currently being renovated as a haunted Bed and Breakfast.

We've investigated the hospital three times, twice on our own and a third time for a special collaborative livestream on Doctor Blanchard's birthday. On both our second and third visits, we heard a loud GROWL on the second floor; a disembodied voice captured in the basement; unexplained FOOTSTEPS; an EVP saying "HELP"; spirit box voices saying "HOSPITAL," "GO TO THE MORGUE, and "CAN'T STOP." On top of this, multiple investigators felt intense rage, and had to stop investigating.

Witches of Michigan: 3 of Michigan's Most Haunted Places

Michigan has its share of spooky legends (see for yourself on our haunted location page). Not surprisingly, a good number of these "hauntings" revolve around a supposed witch who continues to roam these locations.

Pere Cheney: The Witch That Cursed This Ghost Town

The historic town of Pere Cheney was established in 1874, but went abandoned by 1917. It is now a literal ghost town, plagued by hundreds of reports of "paranormal activity."

According to legend, a witch was blamed for the fires and disease outbreak that ravaged the city. She was hanged on a large and menacing tree in the back of the town's old cemetery. It's this cemetery that's said to be the town's most "haunted" location.

During our investigation, we caught some impressive EVP's by this tree. Hear them in our video below:

Soop Cemetery: Where Rituals Continue to This Day

Soop Cemetery in Belleville, Michigan is one of our favorite haunted sites. Every time we go, we capture intriguing evidence, from voices and noises to a full-on shadow figure.

It is a fact that the namesake Elizabeth Soop was a witch during her life. To this day, rituals are conducted atop her grave... we've even found old bones and other ritualistic items there during investigations.

Seven Gables Road: If You Hear Her Scream, You'll Die

We've been to Seven Gables road a couple times, most recently for the Public Ghost Hunt event that we hosted.

This is the most "urban legend-y" one on the list, as there is no documentation whatsoever for its "witch" legend. However, it's one of the most talked about hauntings in Michigan. Supposedly, a witch cursed the road, and if you go there today and hear a loud scream, you're going to die. We heard a scream there during an investigation... but we're still alive.

There does appear to be real paranormal activity along the road; however, we must separate fact from fiction. It does not seem to be linked to the "witch" legend whatsoever. So what is actually haunting Seven Gables? That will require further investigations.

Pere Cheney: Michigan's Most Haunted Cemetery

Yes. Pere Cheney. Though it's often referred to as the "most haunted" location in Michigan, it's also plagued as being the most over-talked about locations as well.

I'll be the first to admit: before I visited Pere Cheney last week, I didn't think there was anything to the legend. I thought it was all hype (as we've found in previous investigations, these "famous" hauntings often don't live up to the talk online).

But I was wrong.

Pere Cheney is an incredibly active cemetery, and we caught tons of class A, highly impressive EVP's during our investigation. WATCH our video below to see what I mean:
So could Pere Cheney actually be haunted? We had such intriguing experiences there that it's difficult for us to say otherwise.

Though you've probably heard this (a lot) from the hundreds of other sites that discuss Pere Cheney, we highly recommend you visit and see for yourself the palpable energy the remains there to this day.

How to Visit Northville's Abandoned Sanatorium

The Maybury State Park in Northville, Michigan boasts several scenic trails and popular outdoor recreation activities. But what many visitors don't realize is that before it was a state park, it was a sanatorium for tuberculosis patients.

That's right.

To this day, several historical markers and even some scattered remains of the former sanatorium remain throughout the park's many trails. In addition to the physical remnants, locals will tell you that the spirits of patients also remain. Their lost souls are said to still roam the trails at night, manifesting in the form of dark shadows, glowing eyes, and eerie voices and noises.

We investigated the park last week, and walked away with impressive evidence:
A majority of the above investigation was where the infirmary used to be. An approximate 10 minute walk, this spot is hard to miss, as there is a sign relaying the historical information. There are also bricks and foundation from the sanatorium on the side of the trail.

It appeared to us that the kids, perhaps those that passed through the Children's Camp, still remain. An investigator experienced being touched and tapped on the elbow, the height where a kid likely would. The spirit box also clearly said "we're kids."

Could the Maybury State Park still be haunted?

The park is open until 10pm, and remains a safe, open-air location to check out amidst the Coronavirus pandemic. If you do plan on visiting, please remember to adhere to the posted hours, and remember to physical distance and wear a mask if you must be within 6 feet of strangers.

A Haunting in Stockbridge: The "Screaming Hermit"

7/6/2020

Picture
For decades, the "Stockbridge Hermit" has plagued the stretch of road adjacent to the Unadilla State Wildlife Area.

The legend is simple, a familiar "hitchhiker" type of roadside tale: supposedly, an old and deranged looking woman will suddenly appear on the side of the road, screaming at you as she chases you car. Other forms of the legend state that she appears in different sections of the woods, within the Unadilla State Wildlife Area. More extreme versions of the legend state that if you see her, you will die.

Locals, perhaps fittingly, refer to this apparition as the "Screaming Bitch" of Stockbridge... or just as the "Stockbridge Hermit."
We drove down the stretch of road last week, even hopping out to venture into the Unadilla State Wildlife Area.

We didn't have high expectations, but we seemed to capture three voices on our SB-7 Spirit Box device. Each voice sounded like the same female... who even clearly introduced herself as "Addison."

Does the name "Addison" have anything to do with the Unadilla State Wildlife Area, the town of Stockbridge, or the hermit legend? We don't know, and will need to conduct more research to find out.

Hatchet Man Road: The TRUTH Behind Michigan's Most Famous Urban Legend

6/30/2020

Picture
Hatchet Man Road sure sounds like a road you don't want to travel down. Especially at night.

Though this isn't the road's "official" name (the signs say 28th Avenue), locals have dubbed it the ominous "Hatchet Man Road" due to its supposed hauntings and legends that are told and passed down throughout all of Michigan.

Supposedly, a paranoid man in the '80s built an underground bunker, and at the peak of his decent into madness... you guessed it... killed his entire family with a hatchet. Thus spawning the overwhelming reports of paranormal activity along the road his bunker once resided on, currently along a patch of 28th Avenue in the small town of Gobles.

This story has been passed down and told by locals since presumably the '80s, and has since spread throughout Michigan. It is said never to travel down the road at night, for you'll see glowing eyes and orbs, eerie shadow figures, and hear loud growls and creepy voices.

One of the main reports involves cars mysteriously malfunctioning only while driving down the supposedly haunted section of 28th Avenue.

We investigated the road last week, after one of our investigators, who grew up hearing about the legend, revealed that she experienced the reported car troubles a few years ago while driving through Hatchet Man Road.

Since we now had a credible source's testimony regarding its strange occurrences, we tried our best to document any paranormal activity of our own along Hatchet Man Road.

In the video below, you can hear our investigator's first-hand account of car issues along the road, and see our follow-up investigation of the incident:
Unfortunately, we didn't capture any paranormal activity whatsoever. The only "strange" occurrence was the faint sound of footsteps, but that was likely the rain or a small animal. We even debunked the claim of "eye" and "orbs" in the woods: one some trees, we found reflective eyes placed on the bark. If someone is driving down the road at night, especially if they're driving fast, it's very likely they'll mistake these fake, reflective eyes as real ones.

The Kalamazoo Country Youtube page even debunked the claims further, stating it's geographically impossible for an underground bunker as described in the legend to even exist along the road.

So why do reports of paranormal activity still persist along the road? And why do they exist in the first place?

Perhaps there is some truth to the legends after all. We didn't experience any, but who knows? If you're brave enough to venture down Gobles' "Hatchet Man Road" at night, let us know in the comments if you have any spooky experiences!

Our Most Profound Paranormal Experience: CAUGHT ON CAMERA

6/8/2020

Picture
We learned about a history and supposedly haunted cemetery in the small town of Potterville, Michigan, after speaking with the well-respected Unsolved Paranormal Society about their intriguing experiences there.

During their investigations there, they seemed to gather the most evidence around a particular gravesite in the older section of the cemetery.

So, when we visited the cemetery last week, that's where we decided to focus our investigation. It was a bitterly cold night, so we didn't stay long. We planned to only do a quick spirit box session at the grave, and leave after a few minutes.

After three years investigating the paranormal, we still remain skeptical, and go into every investigation with minimal bias and preconceived notions.

In other words: we didn't expect to encounter and document the level of activity that we did.

Voices were coming through the spirit box simultaneous with the EMF (electromagnetic field) detector spiking. It was an overwhelming and emotional experience, as the spirits indicated they were stuck at the cemetery. When asked if they were lonely, all our devices went off.
